Writing every day is less about output than it is about staying in conversation with your own attention. The page is not a destination; it is a mirror that hardens whatever you bring to it.

Most days, the work is bad. That is the point. Bad writing is the cost of staying in motion, and motion is the only thing that produces, eventually, a paragraph worth keeping.

## Beginning before you are ready

There is no version of you who is ready. There is only the version who sits down anyway. The first sentence is allowed to be wrong. It is not the final sentence. It is permission.

I have a friend who keeps a single index card on her desk that reads, in pencil: *something is better than nothing*. She has written a book that way.

## Notes on a daily practice

A few things that have held up for me, across years of inconsistency:

- **Show up at the same time.** The brain is a creature of habit; meet it where it is.
- **Write longhand sometimes.** It slows the hand to the speed of thought.
- **Stop while it is still going well.** Tomorrow's self will thank you for the unfinished sentence.
- **Re-read your old work, gently.** Not to admire it. To remember that you were once stuck on a problem you have now forgotten.

## The long view

Years from now, you will not remember the bad mornings. You will remember the shape that emerged from showing up. The page is patient. It will wait for you to arrive.

The book does not get longer when you read it slowly. Your relationship to it does.

I used to count books. Forty-two a year. Sixty-one. I would post the list in December and feel, for an evening, that I had accomplished something. Then I would forget what most of them said.

## A shift

A few years ago I cut the number in half. Then in half again. I now finish maybe twelve books a year, and I remember almost all of them.

Slowness is not the opposite of ambition. It is a different ambition. It says: I would rather know one book the way I know a friend than glance at fifty the way I glance at strangers on the street.

## What slow reading looks like

It is mostly mundane. You underline. You stop and stare out the window. You re-read paragraphs not because you missed them but because you want to feel the sentence land again. You write in the margins. You argue. You agree.

You let the book interrupt your day, instead of fitting it around the day's edges.

## A small experiment

If you have a book on your shelf that you have meant to read for years, try this: read it twenty minutes a day, with no other goal. Do not track pages. Do not race the end. Just be with it.

You will be surprised what a book can become when you let it take its time.

On Reading Slowly

The most reliable tools in my life are the ones that have stopped asking for my attention.

A pen. A paper notebook. A text editor with no plugins. A camera with one lens. A bicycle. None of these have changed materially in years. None of them want me to upgrade. None of them have a notification system.

## The cost of clever

Clever tools have a way of becoming the thing you spend your time on, instead of the thing they were meant to help you do. The note-taking app that promised to organize your thinking has become, instead, a hobby in itself. The IDE has become more complicated than the code.

There is a kind of compounding fatigue in maintaining tools that maintain themselves badly.

## What boring tools give you

- **A stable surface.** You stop relearning the interface.
- **A clear horizon.** The tool does not surprise you. You can plan around it.
- **Lower stakes.** Nothing is being optimized in the background without your knowledge.
- **Time back.** You spend it on the work, not the workflow.

## A short defense

I am not against new tools. I am against new tools that demand to be the protagonist. Most of the work I am proud of was made with software older than my career, on hardware I have not thought about in months.

If your tools are interesting to you, that is fine. Just make sure they are not more interesting than the work.

A Case for Boring Tools

Attention is not a faucet you turn on. It is a landscape, and you walk it with the body you have today.

We talk about focus as though it were a single resource, easily measured, easily depleted, easily restored. But anyone who has tried to read a difficult book on a tired afternoon knows the truth: attention has terrain. There are gentle slopes and impossible cliffs. There are clearings you stumble into without warning.

## The myth of the focused hour

The idea that you should be able to sit down for sixty unbroken minutes and produce your best work is a productivity fantasy. Some hours are not yours. They belong to your worry, to your blood sugar, to the conversation you had last night that you have not finished thinking about.

The work is to notice which hour you are in, and to use it accordingly.

## Three kinds of hours

Roughly, I find my hours fall into three categories.

### Sharp hours

The mind is bright and tight. This is when you do the work that matters: the writing, the deciding, the difficult email. These hours are rare. Protect them ferociously. Do not spend them on inbox.

### Soft hours

The mind is willing but slow. This is good time for editing, for tidying, for reading something interesting but not urgent. You can be productive in soft hours, but not at peak.

### Closed hours

The mind is unavailable. Trying to force work into a closed hour is how you produce, mostly, resentment. Better to walk, to nap, to do laundry. The hour will reopen, eventually, on its own schedule.

## A practice

For a week, label your hours as you finish them. Sharp, soft, or closed. Do not try to change anything. Just notice the pattern.

You may find that your sharp hours are not where you thought they were. You may find that you have been spending them on tasks that any closed hour could have handled. That is the lesson of paying attention to attention.

## The longer arc

Over years, attention has a shape too. There are seasons when you can read anything; seasons when you cannot read at all. Both are honest. Treat the landscape as it is, not as you wish it were.

A few rituals I have collected, none of which are profound, all of which I keep.

## Morning

I make coffee before I touch my phone. The coffee takes nine minutes. In those nine minutes I look out the window, or I do not. Either way, the day starts in a room with one person in it.

## Before writing

I read one paragraph of something I admire. Just one. Not for inspiration; for calibration. I want to remember what good sounds like before I begin.

## At noon

I close the laptop and walk for twenty minutes. No podcast. No call. I have solved more problems on these walks than at the desk.

## End of the workday

I write tomorrow's first sentence today, while the context is still warm. In the morning I do not have to begin from nothing. I have to continue.

## Before bed

I read on paper. Twenty pages of fiction, usually. The screen stays in the other room. Sleep arrives faster on the nights I keep this one.

None of these are non-negotiable. I skip them often. But on the weeks I keep most of them, the work is better, and so am I.
